My landlady's village

Not so long ago Zacharenia, my landlady lived in a little village in Eastern Crete.

Here time stood still, for nothing was new and nothing moved fast

.... yet the daily grind continued .... from harvesting peaches

.... to picking artichokes in the early morning light.......

..... to collecting firewood by donkey

( for they were far more reliable than the truck!)

....  to tending the sheep

.... and to baking bread.

Too many of these precious little villages are dying out ....
as are the people who made them so wonderful.

  3. Thank you J and J - unfortunately this aspect of Crete is dying out fast and the little villages are just empty shells for tourists to buy up and westernise - though there are excellent architects who work tirelessly to retain the Cretan traditional home and spirit.

  4. I love this post! I find it very poetic. Your first pic is the kind I'd like to have on my wall and dream about. The light is fantastic, the place seems to be out of time. Thank you for that beautiful moment!
