The Jacaranda babies

Sydney's north shore is awash with the purple haze of Jacaranda trees

.... all thanks to the Mater and the Royal North Shore Hospitals giving Jacaranda saplings to all new mothers in the 1930's and 1950's

These were then planted at home to grow with the babies

Their legacy?

Jacaranda avenues, canopies and carpets as far as the eye can see

  1. Francesca - absolutely stunning especially the carpet of fallen flowers - thank you for making this rather dreary grey northern hemisphere morning brighter. Love Balepy

  2. They're so gorgeous. They are all over San Miguel de Allende in the springtime, too. Mesmerizing!

  3. Francesca, we must be on the same wave length. Jacarandas would have to be one of my all time favourite trees. Thanks for the history lesson! I love the idea of planting such a wonderful tree to grow with my babies. My husband grew ours from seed when he was an apprentice horticulturist and now my children climb in the tree in our front yard. My heart always soars when the first flowers appear. I know its nearly christmas time and all things seem new and exciting. Did you know that in the bible the colour purple represents royalty! I think the jacaranda is regal and beautiful and royal.xxxCorrina.

  4. Thank you for your wonderful comments - I love that these beautiful trees move others as they do me - I find everything about them so pleasing and satisfying - and I love the purple haze on the landscape - as if someone has gone mad with a purple paintbrush. Fxx

  7. Glorious Glorious color and perfect with the green. We have a canopy at my children's school and I love walking under the "purple rain" each afternoon. Love your images, something so often taken for granted.

  8. Oh Frannie, the lane where I grew up and where my parents still live had a canopy of jacaranda's which I used to walk under to catch the bus.
My grandfather who lived at the top of the lane planted them down both sides when he first bought the land. So by the time I came along they were well established. We used to collect the cicada shells that we found on the trunks and put them on our school shirts in a contest of most collected each morning while waiting for the bus.
Thankyou so much for such a lovely visual trip down memory lane.
